Facilities to support sovereign explosives manufacturing capabilities

Spantech designed and constructed the major earth-covered section of the large Ammunition Process Building (APB) at the Benalla Munitions Facility.

This critical part of the APB provides a safe and controlled environment to manufacture, assemble and package a wide range of ammunition, explosive ordnance and other munitions.

The facility may also play a key role in the future Sovereign Guided Weapons and Explosive Ordnance (GWEO) Program currently planned by the Commonwealth.

The design of the APB features the same wide-span arched cross section as the Spantech 23m ECB, a design that was tested in full-scale trials at Woomera, SA.

World class manufacturing facilities

The Benalla Munitions Facility is owned by the Commonwealth and operated by Australian Munitions, a business of Thales Australia Limited.

Australian Munitions is the largest supplier of explosive ordnance to the Australian Defence Force, delivering ammunition, propellants, explosives and related services. They are also a principal supplier of small arms ammunition to the New Zealand Defence Force.

Australian Munitions manufacture from two main regional sites, Benalla in Victoria and Mulwala in New South Wales. The Benalla site produces ammunition, explosive ordnance and other munitions, while the Mulwala site focuses on high quality propellants and explosives.

Spantech has constructed EO manufacturing facilities and earth covered buildings (ECB) to store high explosives at both Benalla and Mulwala.
