Major refurbishment of an aquatic centre with an outdoor 50 metre Olympic pool

With extensive experience in the design, construction and project management of major aquatic projects, Griffith University invited Spantech to tender on the refurbishment of the Gold Coast campus Aquatic Centre.

While the project did not include any Spantech roofing or formwork elements, Spantech won the project on the strength of its project management capabilities and comprehensive safety, quality and environmental management system.

The project was audited by an accredited WorkSafe Qld safety auditor in January 23 with zero non-conformances.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Rescuing a failing asset

The Aquatic Centre (G45) is a key piece of infrastructure and was integral in the contribution Griffith University made to the 2018 Commonwealth Games. The pool was designed and constructed to FINA requirements and was completed in 2017.

For several years, the adhesive holding the tiles in the pool of the Aquatic Centre (G45) has been failing. Various areas on the base of the pool have had remedial works done to re-fix the tiles that have come off. The starting blocks tiles are also cracked and loose in various area. The quantity of tiles that are failing is extensive now and the rate of degradation has accelerated in the past six months. Due to safety issues the pool was closed to the public.

PROJECT REQUIREMENTS

SPANTECH ENSURED MAJOR PARTS OF THE FACILITY REMAINED OPERATIONAL AND OPEN THROUGHOUT THE CONSTRUCTION PROGRAM

A key part of the contract required Spantech to maintain services and access to the gymnasium, amenities and support office space during construction. Spantech coordinated major actives with the University to ensure large parts of the infrastructure remained open for the students and wider community.
